What The World Eats
Here is a fascinating photo essay of what families around the world eat in a typical week, along with how much they spend on food. I found it interesting that the family from North Carolina spent $341.98 and had almost no fresh produce, mainly processed and junk foods.
The family from Guatamala spent $75.70 and had lots of fresh produce, and healthy real food, and the family from Chad spent $1.23 and had mostly grain.

I think I saw something similar published a whle back, and I thought the "American" diet depicted in the picture was incredibly sad. It was all crap, and as you pointed out, incredibly expensive crap.
I was reading an article about how some companies have started marketing "individual" sized portions of their products in overseas markets - specifically, in Third World countries, where the people don't have a lot of money. The single-serve portions are cheaper, but what happens is a family gets a single-serving that they, then, have to share, and no one gets enough. I think it's just sad that the response to the world food crisis is "send Lays potato chips in single-serving packages to make them more affordable."
I have not seen that about marketing the individual size packages in third world countries, that is very sad. Thanks for sharing that.
I just read an article that showed farmers in MI letting their cherry crops rot on the ground because of a federal marketing order, to keep prices up. There are people without enough to eat and we force farmers to let food rot, it is just pathetic.
