Kale Smoothies and A New Blog

My kale is in full bloom, the bright yellow flowers are so cheery. I grow it to eat, but I would happily grow it just for the flowers. They attracted a bumblebee to my yard and I was so excited to see one finally. Of course it was gone by the time I got the camera. Isn't that always the way?!

My girls are taking AP exams this week, so it is more important than ever to start them out with a good breakfast. Of course in my house that means green smoothies packed with nutritious goodies ;-)

Since my kale is flowering and will soon be going to seed, I had to use store bought in my smoothie.  I used a variety of fruits and veggies along with some spirulina and they were a lovely deep turquoise color. Sadly that doesn't come through in the photo.

I don't usually measure things when making smoothies. I like a lot of stuff in them and I just throw in whatever looks good, so this is a close estimate. I used my vitamix for this and it served 4.

                                           Kale Smoothie

1 bunch kale
2 carrots
1 cucumber
1 apple
2 bananas
6 oz. fresh  or frozen blackberries
2 c. fresh pineapple
1 orange, peeled
2 T. spirulina
4 T. chia seeds
water to thin as needed

Process in high powered blender, adding water to make it as thin as you like- I like mine thick.

And now for my blog news. As I've mentioned before, I love to knit, quilt and craft, and this isn't really the place for those pursuits, so I have started a new blog devoted to all the fun craftiness. If you enjoy handwork, you can check it out here- http://jaknitsquiltsandcrafts.blogspot.com/

Your smoothie looks delicious. I'd like to try it to see if the taste of the spirulina is "covered" enough for me. I'm such a wimp. ;-)

I long for bees and pretty flowers in the garden. Lucky you! =)

The kale flowers are gorgeous. I had no idea.

I don't normally measure smoothie things either. A whole bunch of kale, wow! I haven't worked up to that yet. But I also use less fruit so maybe that is the secret. I wil give it a try. It certainly sounds uber healthy. :-)

Julielynn, I couldn't taste the spirulina at all, but it may just be because I'm used to it ;-)

Alicia, the kale flowers are really beautiful, especially when there are a whole bunch of them in bloom. I do put a lot of fruit in the smoothies, I think it masks the flavor of the kale ;-)

Wow, this sounds so healthy and with all the delicious fruit, it must be super delicious too. I"m not too much of a "smoothie" person, but I must get more into it; this sounds so good inside and out!

It's cool you started a new blog...looking forward to hearing about your crafty activities.

Rose, I have been drinking a green smoothie pretty much every day for a few years now, and I just don't feel right if I miss it. Some days it's more fruit, others more veg, but I love them all :) Thanks for the kind words about the new blog.

You know - I don't ever do vegetables in my smoothies - I just never think about it. Food for thought. vegetables for thought. You have opened my eyes.

Claudia, lol, vegetables for thought. I like that!

I had no idea that kale produced such beautiful flowers! Your smoothie is so healthy!
